The rise of Rickeda.

From as far back as we can remember, Rickeda Taylor has embodied effortless style. She’s a chic tropical girl making her mark in the Barbadian fashion landscape, with a story we’d love to share. Throughout the years, she’s been collecting her fashion magazines, bookmarking style blogs, and even experimenting with voguish trends but she has come to know her style and now wears it naturally, like a hibiscus flower in bloom. In fact, because of this, she’s been gaining recognition as a model, effortlessly carrying the looks of Bajan designers such as Tialani and the amazing Ghanian-inspired brand of Afro Disiak. Let’s explore her world and perhaps, you could take away a few ideas of your own from this attorney-at-law by day and fashion enthusiast by night.

How she got started with fashion.

Rickeda’s fashion journey began way before she even understood what fashion was. Her mother was a visual muse and mentor as young Rickeda found herself trying on mummy’s many dresses, shoes, makeup, and accessories. However, it wasn’t until secondary school that she really began to comprehend the world of fashion. As she explored the work of Barbadian designers Avark for her art SBA, who also studied both law and fashion, she became inspired, eagerly wanting to wear the looks of her favorite designers. She quickly realized that fashion could be expensive; her love was now met with the financial challenge of being able to afford the looks she desired. She had to come up with a plan. Therefore, she started saving every penny she earned towards buying her own sewing machine and teaching herself, so she could make outfits to her heart’s content.

Rickeda’s style in a nutshell.

Rickeda quickly got to work as she sought to create and satisfy her obsession with clothes and design. Even though she was passionate, she was far from perfect, and a few botched hems surely didn’t stop young Rickeda from blossoming with a few monochromatic looks, inspired by her love for trends of the late 90s and early 2000s. She always had a love for classic, structured outfits that could be dressed up or down, but as time went on, she knew she had to step out of her comfort zone of only wearing neutral palettes if she wanted to be taken more seriously in the realm of local fashion. Today, at twenty-eight, Rickeda has matured, found her look and now is in full bloom as a model, wearing African prints and many bold tasteful colours that compliment her island-chic personal style.

The importance of accessories.

Throughout the years, Rickeda has learned quite a bit and she always says that accessories have an important role to play when planning your look. “Don’t underestimate accessories. A simple watch, rings, a pair of earrings, or a chain can really complete and elevate your outfit and make you appear more ‘put together’ because you paid attention to the details. And if you feel like you have a ‘boring wardrobe’ affordable stylish accessories, like statement earrings or a bomb pair of shoes, can bring your basics to life.”

Whether you dress up or down, dress well!

Now that you’ve got the complete look, it’s time to hit the streets! Rickeda’s mantra is “No matter how you feel, get up, dress up, and show up!” Even though that’s easy to say, what about those down days? Well, Rickeda has a remedy for that too: “Always try to dress up! It’s sure to help your mood – especially when you are feeling unmotivated. To me, there’s nothing worse than feeling crappy and looking crappy at the same time.” Similar to our previous feature Gelga, she also loves comfy athleisure wear when she’s not in the mood to make a bold statement. However, it still has to be thoughtful, well put together, and ready for the road. On the other hand, when she is ready to step out, you better believe that she will make a few extra stops, just to show off her outfit. “That’s the effect and confidence that dressing well has on you.”

The future for Rickeda.

Going forward, Rickeda will always stay true to who she is, with her old fashion magazine collection and Pinterest board. Her drive and passion for all things fashion will continue to make her gain further international recognition in the industry as a model, future designer and source of inspiration, as she encourages persons to create their own style, express their creativity and find what sparks joy!

Don’t base your style on what’s ‘trendy’ or you will never actually have a style of your own to be confident in.
