Usually, when people think of baking entrepreneurs we think of individuals who went to do a baking course of some sort to kick-start their journey but today, this story is different. It is with great pleasure that we introduce you to Mickal-Anne Goodridge, a young determined 21-year-old baker and entrepreneur who learned everything through trial and error.
At the tender age of 9 and with a curious mind, Mickal-Anne developed a profound passion for cooking and being in the kitchen. While most people would have thought that she would be following in the footsteps of her mother, who is a caterer, there would prove to be something else that would keep her in the kitchen. Instead of the pots, Mickal-Anne opted for the pans.

From young, Mickal-Anne was just a simple girl with a love for trying different foods and experimenting along the way. It wasn’t uncommon to find her sitting in front of the television with her eyes glued to shows from the Food Network channel nor was it odd to find her browsing the food discovery page on Instagram, in search of tricks and tips to perfect her newly discovered passion. Whether it was the calming aroma of freshly baked pastries or the satisfaction of creating meaningful treats for friends and family, she always found baking to be more exciting and as a result, this die-hard foodie became obsessed.
If you are wondering whether she was a natural from the get-go, let’s just say that back then, her cakes were probably better to look at and not partake. They flopped and dropped to the point where she probably should have considered the culinary arts instead. However, despite her challenging start, Mickal-Anne continued to experiment and during her school years, while she attended the Lodge School within Barbados, her schoolmates were her first major test subjects. With the much-needed practice, the results began to show. Her cakes began to take shape and instead of just throwing in ingredients, she started to measure and master her recipes. After receiving exceptional reviews and an increase in demand for her baking creations, it occurred to her that she could make a living by doing what she loves, and so she did! Mickal-Anne responded with the creation of Micka’s Sweettreats, a company created with the niche of satisfying those with a sweet tooth.

Mickal-Anne was only 16 when she first launched her new baking business but shortly after, life’s pressures were starting to creep in and her crazy but exciting homemade experiments slowly but surely began to be put on the back burner. Even though Mickal-Anne absolutely loved baking, she thought that perhaps it was time to follow her other interests as baking was viewed as just a hobby and not very sustainable. As a result, she opted to pursue an Associate Degree in Applied Arts which focussed on Communication Studies and Art and Design. Whereas many would say that Mickal-Anne was making a huge mistake, she was simply doing what she thought was correct at the time as a young adolescent finding her way throughout life. However, little did she know that her educational pursuits would be the reasons why she stands out in her field today.

Apart from baking, she always had a love for art and a keen eye for crafty designs. Instead of seeing her studies as a negative, she thoughtfully decided to infuse her art related studies into her baking. If you pay close attention, you would notice that her work has many elements that she would have learned in art class such as the mixing of water-based colors to produce captivating icings and her sculpted heartfelt shapes that she uses for her exceptional homemade cookies.
Before we go any further, let’s take a minute to talk about her highly sought-after homemade cookies. Without a doubt, Mickal-Anne stands out and prides herself on her delicately decorated cookies. Naturally, she was never a flashy person and she always liked to keep things creative but simple at the same time. Even though simple, she has perfected her craft to the point where you can guarantee that every personalized cookie of her’s carries that perfectly soft and chewy texture. With every bite, you get a taste of “home” and that is exactly what she wants her customers to feel and experience when they unfold a pack of her freshly oven-baked bites.
Mickal-Anne always wanted to be different through her products and remarkably, she does just that by staying true to who she really is at heart. She is an honest no-nonsense individual who strives to be as pure as possible and tries to stay away from the many artificial flavors that are ever-present today. If you order a coconut cake from Micka’s Sweettreats, you can trust that you will find actual coconut inside. She doesn’t get caught up with the conventional way of doing things and as a result, she is praised for her natural cake and cupcake flavors such as orange, sorrel, chocolate, blueberry, cookies n cream, moist red-velvet, vanilla swirl treats and many others (see menu at the end).
