Why feature “D.Luxe”?
D.Luxe
When it comes to music and being absolutely true to yourself, Dionna Goodman, better known by her stage name DJ D.Luxe, is an excellent example to follow. At the age of 42, D.Luxe is a Spanish-born but Chicago-raised disc jockey and event curator with an authentic soul. Throughout the years, her genuine personality and travels have allowed her to gain international recognition and whether she’s playing at pop-up shops, being the musical vibe curator for PM Splash, or even bringing the vibes to Soho House, corporate events, or parties for prestigious brands, D.Luxe certainly knows how to elevate souls and bring the house down! Without a doubt, her sets are a joy to watch as she completely loses herself in her music and keeps you dancing all night with her love for afrobeats, funk, RnB, Latin, Brazilian, and house fusions. Outside of her music career, D.Luxe is the mother of 3 “dope souls” and today, we are pleased to ask her 7 stimulating questions about her creative mind, musical style, her BIMHAUS events, and undoubtedly, her secret to being the “Soulful Sound Curator” that she is.
1) How did it all start for you in the music industry as a DJ?
“Music has been integrated into my life since I was a little girl. I literally have playlists for when I wake up to bedtime. I started djing at Lime Bar (now West Bar) at Limegrove Lifestyle Centre back in 2011 with the dopest female drummer, Onika Best.”
2) How would you describe your style as a DJ?
“I would describe my style as, ‘eclectic timeless soul’. Ranging from house music, afrobeat fusions, classic & remixed hip hop, R&B, etc.”
3) How important is music, and creativity in your life?
“Being that music is so vast, you can find songs and Hz frequencies to fit every human emotion and mood to get you through all kinds of things, including meditation. Creativity keeps me motivated in general. I love to operate outside the box on everything I do, even when the road is a little lonely and a little harder to get more people to follow along, my tribe ends up finding me. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
4) What moved you to create BIMHAUS?
Video by: @shotbyansuni
“I love fashion and all the elements that combine to deliver a fashionable experience. I also love connecting people with other like minds that are super dope at what they do, to build the community. Before I started BIMHAUS in 2016, I actually did an event entitled Art x Soul one year prior at The Cliff Beach Club, and Shane Eastmond was my first featured artist. At that time, lots of people complained that Bim was lacking creatives on a whole and as I was continuously meeting dope creatives (that kept to themselves), I decided to pull them outside and onto the platform. BIMHAUS is all about the creatives in fashion design, photography, videography, makeup artists, models, musicians, artists, etc. It’s not about me at all. I grew up going to Ebony fashion shows in Chicago, and as an adult, New York Fashion Week events, so I wanted to create something special here in Bim instead of complaining or whining about what’s elsewhere. There’s so much talent here.”
5) What was your most memorable gig?
6) What would you say is the secret to your happiness?
7) What business advice would you give to aspiring female DJs?
Decide on the life you wish to live on a daily basis. Instead of making complaints if it’s not going your way according to your vision, find solutions. Even if that entails you needing the help of successful people to make that happen. You get this one life. Live that sh*t. Your way. Bravely.
