At the age of 38, our final “7 with 7” feature is a jack of all trades and a master of quite a few. For years, Matthew “Fewwture” Ashby has pushed the envelope in the music and entertainment industry through the creation of his game-changing business, Dream Real Events and Management. Whether he’s been producing live concerts for Regina Belle, working with international superstars like Amber Rose and Justin Bieber, or even managing stellar Barbadian talents like Alex Jordan, Faith Callender, or the renowned Redbull Thre3style World Champion DJ Puffy, Matthew must be lauded for dedicating his life to helping others succeed within the industry. Furthermore, have you ever wondered how he manages all of this with his personal life? Outside of his professional career, Matthew is an introvert who enjoys road tennis, a man who helps to promote men’s mental health awareness and he’s even a doting father of one. To find out more, we asked him 7 prying questions revolved around getting to know the real Matthew, the honest backend story to his time-consuming career, and undoubtedly, his true intentions for Fewwture, in the future.

1) How did artist management become your passion and career?

“Interesting fact, artist management isn’t my passion; however, building brands and helping other people find their path is my passion, artist management just happened to be the avenue that aligned at the time.”

2) What is it really like managing an artist?

“Managing an artist is like managing a business, all of the elements that are involved in running a business, the same thing applies for an artist. Day-to-day, it’s constant communication with promoters via text and email, then there is the traveling side, making sure all the needs are met. While these short-term goals are important, it’s also important to set time aside to serve long-term goals as well if you want to future-proof your artist/brand… but, the most important part of all is checking in on the well-being of your artist and keeping a check on their mental health. As much as they are a business, they are human first.”

3) What is the greatest challenge you have encountered in artist management and how did you overcome it?

“The greatest challenge for me was trying to manage many artists at once and I fixed that by scaling down.”

4) How do you balance your career with being a devoted father?

“Well, I don’t balance as well as I want to, and that’s why I want to give up on using that word “balance” and aim to “harmonize” instead, which means creating a dynamic and a lifestyle that all aspects of my life can work together and not have to sacrifice one thing too long for the sake of another… If that makes sense.”

5) How does filmmaking fit into your portfolio and aspirations?

“Filmmaking is one of my main passions that I use as a tool to help contribute to my purpose, which is sharing and telling brand stories that can inspire and change lives.”

6) What would success in the future look like for you?

“Success for me looks like being able to say “NO” more often without having to compromise. Success is freedom, and having the time to just be with the family and take part in projects that are purpose-driven.”

7) What advice would you give to up-and-coming artists to help them establish themselves professionally?

“My advice to any up-and-coming artist is to first ask yourself, ‘Am I doing this for the right reason?’. Bypass the popularity and money, is this something you really want to do? Because the work you need to put in and the challenges you will face requires you to pull strength from a place that’s way deeper than the stuff you see on the surface. Be consistent and authentic while building a community that wants to hear what you have to say instead of changing your message. Lastly, build a solid team that will believe in you even in moments when you don’t even believe in yourself.”

Be confident enough to know that the grass is going to be greener wherever you stand.
