Kayon Vaz
At Dev’s Edge, we often cross paths with exemplary individuals within the Caribbean who are innovative, have an immeasurable drive for success, and most importantly, have a desire to help move Caribbean entrepreneurs forward. Today is no exception. We would like you to meet the outstanding Kayon Vaz, the face and voice behind the digital startup HeKaya Media in Jamaica.
Ever since her childhood days of watching the late veteran journalist Ian Boyne as he interviewed and told highly relatable stories of Jamaica’s stellar individuals, Kayon Marie Vaz fell in love with television and media. She felt a deep connection with this passion of highlighting others for their achievements. This is when she knew that this was the career path she wanted to pursue. Unlike many though, she was never concerned about being famous or becoming a popular media star but without a doubt, she was always about giving. In fact, Kayon refers to media as “another way of serving others” or better yet, we loved that she had this to say: “The role you play in providing information to persons within the public is an act of service.”
Kayon’s media success
Kayon first began her media career at the Public Broadcasting Corporation of Jamaica where she hosted the short-lived television series, “Portraits”. Shortly after, she found her way to Jamaica News Network (JNN) as a news presenter, reporter, and producer for the successful health show Pagin Doc. Throughout the years, Kayon continued to excel as a producer and soon found herself producing many other shows such as National Prayer Breakfast, Junior Access, SCQ Access, Powerful Women and Men Perform for Charity, “Watch “N” Win” and now, she is a full-fledged Television Digital Content Producer at the number one morning time show “Smile Jamaica”. Despite her massive success in the industry, Kayon continues to grow her contributions, this time, by developing her very own media company, HeKaya Media.
HeKaya Media
She gave birth to HeKaya Media in 2018. There was a need to fill the void of connecting Caribbean entrepreneurs within a digital space. Though she was eager and ready to effect change, it was not all smooth sailing as she is an overthinker. She was forced to look beyond her imperfections and lack of entrepreneurial knowledge and just trust her gut and launch out.
Within our interview, Kayon mentioned that “Too many times we wait for the perfect moment to start something and the truth is, there are no perfect situations.” That said, despite her self-doubt, she looked deep within and came up with 3 main initiatives within the brand to get persons connected: More Mondays, which consists of short profiles of our regional entrepreneurs from various industries; Digital Tuesdays, a podcast that allows listeners to know the persons behind their brand, and Tool Up Thursdays, the perfect opportunity to see new apps or digital tools to help you improve your business. We recently enjoyed speaking with Kayon as we were featured on Episode #4 of Digital Tuesdays. Check it out.

The future for Kayon
Kayon is super excited about the brand as it already started to gain traction and is slowly beginning to align with her vision of becoming the premier digital media company within the Caribbean. Given her skillset and absolute passion to push our region’s entrepreneurs, we know that she will do well, and Kayon…
We wish you all the best!
