How bold or creative are you? When it comes to your appearance, do you ever embrace that initial “crazy idea” that you get sometimes or do you ignore it and abide by the rules of society? You know what rules I mean! I’m talking about the social do’s and don’ts that say for example “Chelsea boots can’t be worn with short pants” or even the disgust that comes to mind when mixing leopard print with zebra print for an outfit. These social norms subconsciously dictate how we generally look or how we dress but thankfully, there are individuals out there who don’t subscribe to such norms and are thoughtful, bold and brave enough to unleash their creativity to make a difference. One such person is Nicholas “NEC” Boyce and as the first official feature of Dev’s Edge Style & Fashionwe’re going to tell you all about him and how he brings his ideas from a questionable thought to a vivid reality. Get ready as we prepare to enter the life of a visionary where creativity has no limits. Welcome to the world of NEC, the Never-Ending & Creative!

Who exactly is NEC?

If you are expecting reserved and conventional, well… you won’t find it here as Nicholas “NEC”  Z. Boyce is a 28-year-old upcoming male model who isn’t afraid to dibble and dabble in creativity with regard to his appearance and garments. He is a Barbadian creative genius who first chooses a mental image or character, with the aim of executing that appearance in real life, through model photography. He loves to defy the ordinary and he definitely has a thing for artsy dramatic unorthodox looks, derived from his own reflective consciousness.

NEC always stood out as a child growing up (see more here) but as time went on, he learned to overcome his challenges and his differences and that mindset blossomed him into the daringly smooth gamechanger that we know and see today.

Understanding how NEC thinks.

NEC’s thought process is far from average and if he wants to do something, then you can believe that it will be done, no matter what people think or how crazy of an idea it may appear to be! He embraces colors from every palette and he’s eclectic in his approach to execute his concepts with a bang! NEC really likes to give you that “wow” factor with his avant-garde themes depicting self-love through his aesthetic bodily conceptualizations of self. Take for example the time when he impersonated the fictional character Cruella de Vil from the movie and novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians. It was a total hit, wasn’t it? (leave your comments at the end) He’s a professional creative and there is no stopping him.

NEC’s success thus far.

The implementation of being a bold visionary with his craft has granted him the opportunity of being featured as a model at various fashion events within Barbados such as BB Fashion Week, BMEX, Kingdom Arts Fashion Show and the SJPP Project, just to name a few. He’s also now being recognized from a few international creatives alike as his concepts are of high quality and can be marketed globally. In addition, he has collaborated with the likes of Alexander Newton, Colour Me Jayee, Revolt Visuals and even Febuary Photography to help him bring his creative ideas to life.

As NEC continues to make his face and style known within the fashion industry of Barbados and the wider Caribbean, he also wishes to shake the foundations of persons being conformative to societal views and hopefully, to break a few stereotypes along the way.

How to spot and identify NEC?

It’s relatively easy to identify this promising young creative. Even though you wouldn’t see him pop excessively on the streets as he would in his photos, he still carries himself with a sense of class in his demeanor as he goes about his daily activities. First of all, look for the ankh earring, which usually is a must-have accessory for him. Also, on the average day, NEC has a thing for aviator type sunglasses and usually undertakes a semi-elegant approach to streetwear.

Where does he get his inspiration from?

Although NEC is heavily inspired by the more popular classic international sensations like Prince and Michael Jackson, he also follows a few interesting model figures and social media influencers like Alton Mason, Chavvy the Kid and even the comedic Ricky Thompson. It’s also quite common to see him at AnimeKon as he’s a huge fan of comic books and all things anime.

Is he stereotyped as a creative person?

Anytime that someone is different, there is a high possibility that they will be judged. Overall, NEC is extremely happy with his choice of style and self-expression today. In fact, he even said that “It’s like I’ve been hiding from myself all this time.” For that reason, NEC will always encourage anyone to be true to themselves just as he did along this new journey of self-love and embracing his own look.

So what’s next for NEC?

Unlike us, NEC’s brain is always ticking and giving birth to new creative ideas and ones that we would probably never begin to conceptualize. Perhaps he may dip himself in chocolate or honey for his next photo shoot. Who knows? Nonetheless, one thing that we do know, is that he has vision and a serious drive to build his brand. The average person may think he’s wild and crazy but trust us when we say that he knows exactly what he wants. It has always been a dream of his to be featured on the cover of either Vogue, Chanel or Ebony Magazine and we are quite confident that with his thought-provoking concepts of using his body to depict stories and to express his artistic self, he is well on his way.

With “NEC”, you never know what to expect!

You are art! So be whatever kind of art your soul speaks to you. Be bold, be daring and more importantly, be the most authentic version of yourself. You’ll have more fun that way.

What do people think of Nec?

We asked a few people about Nec’s style. Here’s what they said!

“On an average day, NEC’s style is very casually elegant. It’s a mix of looking laid back enough to fit in but glamorous enough to still stand out. On other days, it’s experimental. It’s a mix of his moods and his hopes into a visual.”

Akeem Chandler-Prescod

Spoken word Poet

“NEC loves to take risks! He embraces the avant-garde movement and can be androgynous at times. However, he is very classy in anything that he does.”

Omari Oneil

Barber Stylist, Model, Singer, Designer, BLCKLION

“From my experience, it seems like he likes the dapper style or approach to fashion. He likes to wear his expressivity on his sleeve, literally. His style is his brand”

Alexander Newton

Photographer

“NEC is very fashionable. He is very confident on the runway and his choices of wear always suit him and are bleeding edge. He is articulate to a fault, has a very pleasant demeanor and is very approachable.”

Managing Director, AnimeKon
